Area 2: Supply Chain & Territory (ScT)

The specialisation and simplification of farming systems has been accompanied by a concentration of R&D efforts on a limited number of crops (soft wheat, maize, barley, rapeseed) and a strong structuring of upstream and downstream supply chains around these crops. This co-evolution now constitutes a real lock-in of the socio-technical system, insofar as the adoption and implementation of an innovation by one actor (e.g. farmers) depends on the behaviour of other actors and their capacity for innovation. 

Thus, today, the low introduction of minor species on farms is not only the result of a lack of knowledge on the part of farmers, but also the result of limited availability of varieties and other inputs due to reduced selection and research efforts, a lack of references that can be used by agricultural advisers, and the absence of outlets and consumption for these species. Enabling a transition of agricultural practices towards agroecological systems therefore requires better coordination between stakeholders by (1) co-innovating with upstream and downstream actors in the agricultural sector and (2) bringing together the issues raised by a variety of actors towards a shared strategic vision of agriculture at the regional level.

Three scientific challenges arise:

(1) How can we analyse and design mechanisms that promote co-innovation between agricultural production and food processing stakeholders to support the agroecological transition?
(2) How can the selection, evaluation and production of varieties be adapted to minor species and agroecological system conditions?
(3) How can innovations be designed and evaluated with a variety of actors for an agroecological transition of agri-food systems at the regional level?
