Area 1: Innovations & Farmers (IF)

Generating and mobilizing resources to implement the agroecological transition across diverse agricultural systems.

The transition of agri-food systems towards greater sustainability requires different kinds of systemic innovations, some of which are disruptive, in order to respond to the diversity and specificity of the challenges faced in agricultural situations. The development of such innovations relies on (i) innovative design processes that encourage the exploration and generation of new ideas and knowledge, (ii) their suitability for the real-world situations in which they will be deployed, and (iii) the evolution of the socio-technical systems that enable these transitions.

Three scientific challenges arise:

(1) How can the design, implementation, and evaluation of innovations be adapted to the diversity of situations and species?
(2) How can we capitalize on unique situations to fuel transition beyond these situations?
(3) How can we support the adaptation to climate change of different actors in agricultural systems?
